Mark Reuss, President of General Motors North America Comes to L.A.

Mark Reuss, President of General Motors North America, is spending a few days in the Los Angeles area discussing how GM’s post-bankruptcy mindset has changed and how the company will revitalize their California dealers to improve the customer experience. Reuss spoke to a group journalists at a breakfast meeting and covered everything from marketing to products. He began by bragging about his recent 170 mile per hour experience behind the wheel of a Camaro LZ1 at Germany’s famed Nurburgring racetrack where the car recorded a sub-eight minute lap.

The new Chevrolet Camaro LZ1 and sub-compact Spark will be shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show in mid-November. Reuss says that Chevy is becoming the brand that has everything and is the only top 5 global brand to have seen growth this year, with much of that due to sales of the Cruze over the past five months. For the balance of 2011, Reuss said watch for the Cruze ECO delivering 42 mpg, the 40 mpg Sonic which just starting selling last month and the Malibu ECO coming in December. In addition to the Spark mini-car hitting dealers in 2012, there will be all-new Impala giving Chevy an entry in all five car segments. He also hinted that an all-new Corvette is coming and to stayed tuned for new truck announcements.

On the demographic front, Reuss says the Millennials, the under 30 age group, will make up 40 percent of the car market next year and to help capture that buyer is working with a buddy of his at MTV to understand that crowd.

Reuss mentioned that Buick has the Verano coming and Cadillac the XTS and ATS. He expects the Cadillac ELR, which was the Converj concept car, to have the same showroom draw as the Volt does for Chevy, saying that most people can’t afford the Volt so buy a Cruze. He says Cadillac will soon announce CUE, the Cadillac User Experience infotainment electronics package.

Getting to the real mission at General Motors, Reuss admits there are still big brand and customer care deficits to overcome. He has spent the past two weeks working on customer services and quality is a daily event that everyone is working on. The mindset of “how do we save money is no more”, says Reuss, they are aimed at being a “revenue generating customer-centric company”. The “Mr. Goodwrench” name is gone and won’t return says Reuss, it’s now Certified Service and “we’re going to treat people right.”

There is a big push at General Motors to revitalize the West Coast dealer facilities, then it’ll be on to the “next coast”. Reuss believes that they have the “right products to begin to take back market share. California dreaming is becoming a reality.” In the next two days, he is making the rounds to dealers, media outlets and even the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce to spread the GM word.

On powertrains, Reuss says the E-assist improves fuel economy by 25 percent and with regards to GM bringing diesel to the U.S., he says the “turbo-diesel Cruze is the best version” and they're working on bringing it here.

GM's RelayRides project announced today will be a car sharing service using private vehicles to be launched in California, but Reuss was not sure how all the logistics will work.

Today's breakfast speech by Reuss was a very informative, frank and honest insight into General Motors, a company that us taxpayers have an equity interest in seeing succeed.

On a personal note, Reuss told me privately that his 76 year old father, Lloyd, a former General Motors president, who I interviewed 20 years ago, had a bad spill last January so we wish him a speedy and full recovery.

Toyota's Chief Quality Officer Steve St. Angelo Looks To A Bright Future

Toyota's Chief Quality Officer Steve St. Angelo discusses how the company culture has changed since the mainstream media's assault on the unintended acceleration issue which resulted in millions of recalls and eventual vindication of fault by the Department of Transportation.

Steve St. Angelo
Steve St. Angelo gave a speech to a group of more than a hundred journalists in Los Angeles that started with the breaking news that all of Toyota’s U.S. plants were back operating at full speed as of yesterday following the disruptions caused by the Japanese earthquake back in March. He said, “the parts problems are behind us”. St. Angelo delivered some stories about his background like how he was almost cast in the ‘70’s sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter, to his first day working for Toyota in 2005.

He touched on the “bright future” ahead for the industry and listed the same positive factors that Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. President & COO Jim Lentz did to the same group in January: the U.S. population will grow faster that elsewhere, the age of vehicles on the road is at a high as are used car prices, there’s credit availability, the Fed will keep interest rates low and all manufacturers are offering new cars with more technology and safety features that will drive people into the dealer showrooms. St. Angelo threw green into his presentation discussing how much money the manufacturing plants were saving on energy due to conservation measures such as reducing light bulbs.

He said Toyota will be adding 240 U.S. jobs at its engine plant in Alabama that will add 4 cylinder engines to its 6 and 8 cylinder engine assembly and 2,000 people will be hired at the new Mississippi plant when it opens this Fall to produce the Corolla. St. Angelo said the auto industry employees 8 million workers in the U.S. and will add 88,000 this year and next.

St. Angelo went over new safety features such as a rear window curtain airbag, whiplash-lessening seat belts, blind spot monitors and an eye monitoring feature to make sure the driver is focused on the road. Also a steering wheel that monitors the driver's vital signs, presumably like a treadmill at a fitness center.

It was good to hear that production has returned to 100% following the March 11, 2011, earthquake in Japan and that there's a bright future for the industry but I was really wanting to Steve discuss how the sticky-pedal-stacked-floor-mat and unintended acceleration issues that forced a millions of recalls and billions of dollars/yen to be spent changed his life and Toyota's culture on quality. Maybe it was wiser to leave all that in the past rather re-live that overblown media nightmare.

2011 J.D. Power APEAL Study Hits All-Time High Vehicle Appeal Level

The J.D. Power and Associates 2011 U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study finds that overall vehicle appeal has reached an all-time high since the study’s inception in 1996 with the recently launched all-new and redesigned models substantially more appealing than their carryover counterparts. The improvement is partially driven by higher ratings for vehicle styling and fuel economy provided by owners of recently launched vehicles.

BMW and Dodge each capture three segment-level awards. BMW models receiving awards are the X3, Z4 Roadster and 5 Series, while Dodge receives awards for the Challenger, Charger and Durango. The Charger, Durango, X3 and 5 Series are all redesigned for the 2011 model year. Ford and Honda capture two model-level awards each, with Ford receiving awards for the all-new Fiesta and F-150 LD and Honda receiving awards for the Ridgeline and redesigned Odyssey.

Also receiving awards are the Chevrolet Volt, Hyundai Equus, Land Rover Range Rover, Lexus IS, MINI Countryman, Nissan Armada, Porsche Cayenne, Scion xB, Suzuki Kizashi and Volkswagen GTI. Of these, the Countryman, Equus and Volt are all-new models, while the Cayenne is redesigned. The Equus achieves the highest APEAL score of any model in the industry in 2011. This is the first year that a model other than the BMW 7 Series, Lexus LS or Mercedes-Benz S-Class has led the overall model ranking.

Three models rank highest in their respective segments in both the 2011 APEAL Study and the 2011 IQS: the Dodge Challenger, Ford F-150 LD and Honda Ridgeline.

Porsche is the highest-ranking nameplate in the 2011 APEAL Study for a seventh consecutive year. Hyundai improves from 2010 more than any other nameplate this year, while Jeep and Chrysler also improve considerably.

The APEAL Study examines how gratifying a new vehicle is to own and drive, based on owner evaluations of more than 80 vehicle attributes. The 2011 APEAL Study is based on responses gathered between February and May 2011 from more than 73,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2011 model-year cars and trucks who were surveyed after the first 90 days of ownership.

29th Annual Dana Point Concours d'Elegance - A Day At The Beach

It was the 29th Annual Dana Point Concours d'Elegance on the first three holes of the Monarch Beach Golf Course in Southern California this past weekend but what was almost as impressive as the vintage Packards, Jaguar XKEs, Ford Thunderbirds, MGs, Triumps, Mercedes, Cadillacs, etc. was the valet parking area at entrance of the host St. Regis Hotel. Valets were tightly parking current model $300,000+ Bentleys, Ferraris and Rolls Royces driven by the attendees.

Nowhere near the size of the August Pebble Beach event but quite a show - all round - in a perfect beach setting with clear and not foggy skies. Dave Kuntz of ABC provided commentary of the cars being driven through the show area.

Put it on your calendar for next year! Then hit the beach.

2011 J.D. Power IQS (Initial Quality Study) Results

Here are the JDPA 2011 IQS (Initial Quality Study) Results from a mail out survey of 228 questions in 8 categories that drew 73,000 customer responses for vehicles representing 32 brands in service for 3 months in the Nov. 2010 to Feb. 2011 time frame.

Overall initial quality improves to an average of 107 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) in 2011 from 109 PP100 in 2010. However, the initial quality of launch models—those that are all-new or have had major redesigns—worsens by 10 percent to an average of 122 PP100 in 2011 from 111 PP100 in 2010. Conversely, carryover models—those that have had no significant redesign in the past year—have better initial quality than ever before. Owners of these vehicles report an average of just 103 PP100 in 2011, compared with 108 PP100 in 2010. Lower PP100 scores indicate a lower rate of problem incidences and therefore higher initial quality.

Highlights:
Ford tumbles from 5th to 23rd, Toyota bounces back from 21st to 7th, Land Rover cuts problems per 100 (pp/100) by an industry-best 47, next most-improved Jaguar & Toyota by 16pp/100, industry average flat. Consumer Reports' Tests Show Dodge Durango & Charger Improve Most

Over the past three years, Consumer Reports has recommended only one Chrysler-built model, the DodgeRam 1500 pickup but that is changing since all the model redesigns and new launches over the past two years. Consumer Reports found that Chrysler’s vehicles are getting better, but their level of improvement varies considerably. They tested eight Chrysler models for their current issue: Chrysler 200, Dodge Avenger, and Dodge Charger sedans; the Chrysler Town & Country minivan; and Dodge Durango, Dodge Journey, Jeep Compass, and Jeep Patriot SUVs.

The Durango (pictured above) and Charger, which received significant redesigns, have improved the most. Consumer Reports tested two all-wheel-drive versions of the large Durango, one with a V6 and the other with a V8. Their overall test scores—65 and 66, respectively—are dramatically better than the class-low 45 of the previous Durango V8. Their scores are comparable with that of the redesigned 2011 Ford Explorer (65), although they are well below rivals like the Toyota Highlander and Chevrolet Traverse.

The V6-powered Charger Rallye (pictured above) tested improved to 71, compared with the previous Charger V6’s dismal 58. It now scores close to the Ford Taurus and Buick LaCrosse. The freshened Town & Country, which is a virtual twin of the Dodge Grand Caravan, is also considerably improved, although its 17-mpg overall fuel economy remains the lowest of all minivans we’ve recently tested. Although they performed well enough, none of those three are recommended because they are too new for Consumer Reports to have reliability information.

They were not impressed with the 200, Avenger, Compass, Journey, or Patriot. Despite some improvements, they’re still mediocre overall, scoring at or near the bottom of their respective categories and too low to be recommended.

Good news on improvement for a company that was in bankruptcy two years ago.

2012 Chevy Sonic Starts at $14,495 This Fall

The all-new sub-compact 2012 Chevrolet Sonic will have a starting suggested retail price of $14,495 including destination but excluding tax, title, license and dealer fees for the LS sedan model with a 135 horsepower 1.8L Ecotec engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The Sonic is offered in a four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback and in LS, LT and LTZ trim levels.

The 2012 Sonic LS hatchback will cost $15,395 and, like the LS sedan, will have 15-inch alloy wheels, 10 air bags, StabiliTrak electronic stability control with rollover sensing, traction control, anti-lock brakes, collapsible pedal system and power rear-door child safety locks, air conditioning, power door locks with remote keyless entry and tilt/telescoping steering wheel.

The 2012 Sonic LT sedan starts at $15,695 sedan and hatchback at $16,495 with added features including a six-speaker premium sound system with CD player, XM Radio with three-month trial subscription, power windows with driver's express up/down and power heated side mirrors. The 2012 Sonic LTZ sedan starts at $17,295 and the hatchback at $17,995 hatchback and includes a connectivity package with a USB port, Bluetooth for select phones and music, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, heated front seats, cruise control, fog lamps and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Major available upgrades on Sonic include a six-speed automatic transmission (with 1.8L engine) for $1,070 and a 1.4L Turbo with six-speed manual transmission (available on LT and LTZ) for $700. The Sonic is expected to deliver 40 mpg highway with its 138 horsepower 1.4L Turbo engine mated to six-speed manual transmission.

Chevy expects the Sonic to boom when comparing its features to the 2011 Fiesta S Sedan and 2011 Honda Fit which have less horsepower, torque and standard features with a smaller trunk, fewer airbags than the Sonic. The Sonic replaces the Aveo which has had an 18 percent increase in sales this year through the end of May so, if gas prices stay high, the Sonic could do very well following its very successful larger new sibling, the Cruze, when it hits the streets this Fall.
