2013 Cadillac ATS Voted Motor Press Guild Car Of The Year

The all-new 2013 Cadillac ATS is the winner of the second-ever Motor Press Guild Vehicle of the Year (VOTY) Award. The 2013 Cadillac ATS was one of six finalists chosen by a select panel of MPG journalist members who test and review cars on a regular basis. The final vehicles were evaluated and ranked by all voting journalist and analyst members. Vehicles were rated in the categories of safety, quality, value, performance/handling, design/style, environmental/green impact and technology/innovation. In addition, journalists were encouraged to consider models that reflect the unique style of Southern California.

"In many ways, the ATS is a breakthrough vehicle for Cadillac," said Laura Burstein, President, Motor Press Guild. "Not only is it smaller and leaner than other Cadillacs on the market, it's the first American luxury car that truly goes head-to-head with compact luxury sport sedans from well-known European and Asian brands. Our members remarked that the ATS is capable on both the street and the track, offers a well-made and attractive interior, is replete with the latest technology and – perhaps most importantly – is fun to drive."

"The ATS is the result of an extensive, all new, ground-up mission to deliver a segment-winning vehicle," says Don Butler, vice president of Cadillac Marketing. "That makes it especially rewarding when our efforts are recognized and awarded by a large and influential panel of automotive experts."

To be eligible for the Motor Press Guild Vehicle of the Year award, models must be all-new or substantially changed from the previous year and available at dealerships on or before Jan. 1, 2013. Other 2012 VOTY finalists (in alphabetical order) are the 2013 Ford Fusion, 2013 Honda Accord, 2013 Nissan Altima, 2013 Scion FR-S and 2013 Subaru BRZ.

I will admit the Cadillac ATS was not my top choice because I factor in price as part of the value equation and try to select a vehicle that provides the most for the money.

2014 LA Auto Show Video: Cadillac's Andrew Smith On 2016 ATS-V

The 2016 Cadillac ATS-V sedan and coupe (above) have a 455 horsepower 3.6L twin-turbocharged V6 engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission with Active Rev Match, no-lift shifting and launch control or a paddle-shift eight-speed automatic transmission featuring launch control and Performance Algorithm Shift for a 0 - 60 mph time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of more than 185 mph. The ATS-V has 25-percent greater structural stiffness than non-V models, which contributes to more precise handling and more direct steering responsiveness. GM North America President Reuss Announces Two New Cadillacs

General Motors North America President Mark Reuss announced  the launch the 2012 Cadillac XTS large luxury sedan for the Spring of 2012 and a compact luxury sports sedan codenamed ATS for the summer of 2012.

The XTS is based on the XTS Platinum Concept unveiled at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It will offer an advanced front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive system.

The Cadillac codenamed ATS is a rear-wheel drive luxury sports car to compete head-to-head with the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4 in the luxury market's largest segment.

Reuss also announced the eAssist light electrification feature on the 2012 Buick Regal will be a $2,000 option that delivers an estimated 25-percent improvement in fuel economy, giving Regal eAssist an EPA fuel economy rating of 36 mpg highway/25 mpg city. Regal with eAssist will start at $29,530, and Regal GS will start at $35,310; both prices include $860 in destination charges. The eAssist system is a $2,000 option on the Regal base model, mated to a 2.4L Ecotec engine. Buick will continue to offer the base model without eAssist as well as the 2.0L turbo.Regal eAssist, which goes on sale this fall,  captures energy created during braking to charge a 115V lithium-ion battery that powers a 11-kW (15 horsepower) motor-generator, augmenting a 2.4L Ecotec four-cylinder engine. The eAssist system also allows the engine to shut down fuel delivery in certain deceleration conditions, saving additional fuel. Based on $4-per-gallon gasoline, the eAssist option on the Regal should pay for itself in about 3 1/2 years.

Mark Reuss, President of General Motors North America Comes to L.A.

Mark Reuss, President of General Motors North America, is spending a few days in the Los Angeles area discussing how GM’s post-bankruptcy mindset has changed and how the company will revitalize their California dealers to improve the customer experience. Reuss spoke to a group journalists at a breakfast meeting and covered everything from marketing to products. He began by bragging about his recent 170 mile per hour experience behind the wheel of a Camaro LZ1 at Germany’s famed Nurburgring racetrack where the car recorded a sub-eight minute lap.

The new Chevrolet Camaro LZ1 and sub-compact Spark will be shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show in mid-November. Reuss says that Chevy is becoming the brand that has everything and is the only top 5 global brand to have seen growth this year, with much of that due to sales of the Cruze over the past five months. For the balance of 2011, Reuss said watch for the Cruze ECO delivering 42 mpg, the 40 mpg Sonic which just starting selling last month and the Malibu ECO coming in December. In addition to the Spark mini-car hitting dealers in 2012, there will be all-new Impala giving Chevy an entry in all five car segments. He also hinted that an all-new Corvette is coming and to stayed tuned for new truck announcements.

On the demographic front, Reuss says the Millennials, the under 30 age group, will make up 40 percent of the car market next year and to help capture that buyer is working with a buddy of his at MTV to understand that crowd.

Reuss mentioned that Buick has the Verano coming and Cadillac the XTS and ATS. He expects the Cadillac ELR, which was the Converj concept car, to have the same showroom draw as the Volt does for Chevy, saying that most people can’t afford the Volt so buy a Cruze. He says Cadillac will soon announce CUE, the Cadillac User Experience infotainment electronics package.

Getting to the real mission at General Motors, Reuss admits there are still big brand and customer care deficits to overcome. He has spent the past two weeks working on customer services and quality is a daily event that everyone is working on. The mindset of “how do we save money is no more”, says Reuss, they are aimed at being a “revenue generating customer-centric company”. The “Mr. Goodwrench” name is gone and won’t return says Reuss, it’s now Certified Service and “we’re going to treat people right.”

There is a big push at General Motors to revitalize the West Coast dealer facilities, then it’ll be on to the “next coast”. Reuss believes that they have the “right products to begin to take back market share. California dreaming is becoming a reality.” In the next two days, he is making the rounds to dealers, media outlets and even the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce to spread the GM word.

On powertrains, Reuss says the E-assist improves fuel economy by 25 percent and with regards to GM bringing diesel to the U.S., he says the “turbo-diesel Cruze is the best version” and they're working on bringing it here.

GM's RelayRides project announced today will be a car sharing service using private vehicles to be launched in California, but Reuss was not sure how all the logistics will work.

Today's breakfast speech by Reuss was a very informative, frank and honest insight into General Motors, a company that us taxpayers have an equity interest in seeing succeed.

On a personal note, Reuss told me privately that his 76 year old father, Lloyd, a former General Motors president, who I interviewed 20 years ago, had a bad spill last January so we wish him a speedy and full recovery.

IIHS 2014 Front Crash Prevention Ratings

Twenty-one of 24 cars and SUVs, all 2014 models, earn an advanced or higher rating in the latest round of IIHS evaluations. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) initial batch of front crash prevention ratings covered 74 midsize cars and SUVs and rates vehicles as basic, advanced or superior for front crash prevention depending on whether they offer autobrake and, if so, how effective it is in tests at 12 and 25 mph.

Four vehicles earn perfect scores when equipped with certain options: the BMW 5 series car, BMW X5 midsize luxury SUV, 2015 Hyundai Genesis car and Mercedes-Benz E-Class  car. Eight models earn the highest rating of superior, 13 earn advanced, and three earn a basic rating.

Among the eight superior-rated cars are the Buick Regal, Cadillac CTS, Cadillac XTS and Chevrolet Impala when equipped with GM's forward collision warning and autobrake system and join the superior-rated Cadillac ATS and SRX, which were included in the first round of tests in 2013 .

California Regulations Include Clean Diesel

Ever since the Green Car Journal selected the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Clean Diesel and Audi A3 TDI Clean Diesel as their Green Car of the Year back-to-back in 2009 and 2010 respectively, and having driven a Volvo XC60 D5 AWD diesel (pictured above) in Sweden for a week in 2010 with amazing fuel economy, I've become a big advocate of the new clean diesel powered vehicles, especially for those highway commuters who don't really benefit from the electric hybrids.

Clean Diesel engines, which are 20 to 40 percent more fuel efficient than comparable gasoline engines, will play a big part in the California Air Resources Board new tailpipe and greenhouse gas emissions standards for new passenger vehicles. The California ARB's new Low-Emission Vehicle (LEV III) regulations, the most stringent in the world, will get phased in during model years 2017-2025. In that time, all vehicles sold in California will have to meet Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) tailpipe standards. The new ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel has reduced sulfur emissions by 97 percent.

Recent Diesel Award Winners:
  • The all new 2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI clean diesel was voted the winner of the 2012 Earth, Wind and Power Car of the Year of the Most Earth Friendly Vehicles at the recent North American International Auto Show in Detroit;
  • The 2012 Volkswagen Touareg TDI Clean Diesel was named Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year;
  • In 2010 Audi Q7 TDI Clean Diesel was voted the 2010 Earth, Wind and Power Truck of the Year and the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Clean Diesel was voted the 2009 Earth, Wind and Power Car of the Year.
New Clean Diesels Coming To The U.S.
  • Chrysler Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel in 2013 or 2014, and possibly other Jeep diesels later;
  • General Motors Cadillac ATS diesel in the near future;
  • Audi A8 TDI diesel in 2013;
  • Porsche Cayenne diesel in 2012;
  • GM Chevrolet Cruze diesel in 2013;
  • Mazda SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter clean diesel engine;
  • Mercedes-Benz S-Class S350 BlueTEC diesel in 2012 after a 17-year absence;
  • Volkswagen Passat, which was recently named the Motor Trend 2012 Car of the Year, began production of the Passat diesel in its new Chattanooga, TN plant in the summer of 2011.
